2008 Program Details

2008/09 Mid Year Honours/Postgraduate Diploma Program

Applications for mid year honours/postgraduate diploma in the School of Chemistry are now open. Students wishing to apply for consideration should ensure that they have met the criteria as outlined in the handbook entry.

Applications should be submitted as soon as possible but by no later than 30th June. Students need to lodge an application and a supervisor preference form which can be downloaded from the links below, and submit to Vicki Burley, room 253, Chemistry Building.

Students will be required to successfully complete the safety and induction program which will commence on Wednesday 30th July. Please note this is a compulsory requirement.

Details of the staff available to supervise mid year students are shown below - please ensure that you select 4 prospective supervisors and list them in order of preference.

Subject Description and Generic Skills

The honours program in chemistry is designed to: increase the student's knowledge and understanding of chemical science; develop the process and practice of chemical research; encourage the development of individual investigative skills, critical thought and the ability to evaluate information and to analyse experimental data; promote the acquisition of experimental or theoretical skills in areas currently relevant to one of the research groups in the School of Chemistry; improve oral and written communication skills; and ensure that students receive essential training in laboratory safety procedures.

The honours programs available in chemistry will provide the student with the opportunity to establish/develop the following generic skills: an ability to evaluate scientific and professional literature, the ability to use conceptual models to rationalize experimental data, a capacity to articulate their knowledge and understanding in written and oral presentations, a capacity to provide a written report in professional format, a capacity to manage competing demands on time, including self-directed experimental work, a capacity to enhance teamwork skills as required, and respect for integrity in the conduct and reporting of scientific investigations.
