Leading research centre

The School of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne is one of Australia's leading research centres in the chemical sciences.   It has an excellent international research reputation and an outstanding record in attracting research funding.   In 2005 the School of Chemistry was the most successful department in the University in attracting new Australian Research Council Discovery Grant funding with over $5 million in initial research grants received.

Hosting ARC Centres of Excellence

The School hosts the recently announced ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology. It is also a participant in the Centre of Excellence in Coherent X-Ray Science and the ARC Special Research Centre, the Particulate Fluids and Processing Centre, a joint initiative between the Departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Chemistry and Mathematics and Statistics.

The School is also a member of the Victorian Institute for Chemical Sciences that has received over $10 million in State Government and University support for collaborative chemical science programs. Substantial government and industry funding is received by many other research areas of the School.

World-class facilities

The School has a program to keep its facilities at a world-class level, focus its research efforts and recruit academic researchers with a strong research profile.   The $100 million Bio21 Institute of Molecular Science and Biotechnology, opened in 2005, houses state-of-the-art research laboratories for a number of research groups in the School.   A feature of the Bio21 Institute is the co-location of major instrumentation from a number of University Departments to provide one of the most comprehensive equipment infrastructure resources in the country.   This equipment includes 8 NMR instruments (including an 800 MHz spectrometer), a suite of mass spectrometers and a $5 million microscopy and clean room facility.

Quality postgraduate opportunities

We welcome inquiries from potential postgraduate and postdoctoral students interested in undertaking research in the School.   Further information about research activities can be found on this website and in the School's latest Research Report (PDF - 2.4MB).
