X05 Conference
Social Programme

A range of social activities have been arranged for participants and accompanying persons at X05
  • Welcome reception at the Woodward Conference Centre, 17:30-19:30 Sunday 3 July 2005. Participants and accompanying persons will be welcomed to X05 at a reception in the Woodward Conference Centre, a modern facility in the Law Faculty Building within The University of Melbourne. A range of refreshments will be available while registration formalities are completed and conference materials distributed. As the sun sets there will be panoramic views of the University to the north, and the Melbourne Central Business District to the south.
  • Accompanying persons' reception, 11:00 Tuesday 5 July 2005. An informal get-together has been planned for accompanying persons at University House, the main social centre for academic staff at The University of Melbourne. Conference organisers will assist accompanying persons in getting the most out of their visit to Melbourne. Public transport within the Melbourne metropolitan area is inexpensive and simple to use, and will take you to many of the city's well-known attractions. Longer journeys are readily arranged with tour operators to see the sights out of town, such as the Great Ocean Road, Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary and the Phillip Island penguin reserve.
  • Site visit to the Australian Synchrotron, 14:00-17:00 Wednesday 6 July 2005.
  • The Australian Synchrotron will play a leading role in national research across many disciplines when it becomes operational in 2007. We hope that all X05 delegates will participate in a tour that has been arranged to inspect the Australian Synchrotron site, which is situated approximately twenty kilometres south-east of Central Melbourne, near Monash University. The Australian Synchrotron building is already an impressive sight; the tour will give delegates the opportunity to talk to some of the people who are making this important initiative a reality.
  • Conference banquet, 19:00-22:30 Thursday 7 July 2005.
  • The X05 Conference Banquet will be held in the Great Hall of the National Gallery of Victoria. The NGV houses an internationally acclaimed collection of artworks and has hosted many major international exhibitions. The Great Hall will provide a splendid setting for the main social event of X05 which will provide an opportunity for delegates to sample the great food and wine for which Melbourne is renowned. The venue has recently been refurbished, and features an impressive full-span stained-glass ceiling.
  • Closing event at the Royal Exhibition Building and Museum of Victoria, 14:00-17:00 Friday 8 July 2005. The Royal Exhibition Building is an outstanding example of Victorian colonian architecture. Its architectural significance has been recognised by its inclusion on the World Heritage Register, and is within easy walking distance of our conference venue. To close X05, a tour will be conducted of the Royal Exhibition Building followed by wine and cheese. Delegates may also wish to visit The Museum of Victoria, which is on an adjacent site, and which houses artifacts that reflect the social and natural history of Melbourne and the State of Victoria. Exhibits span the history of Melbourne and south-eastern Australia, including displays of its ancient indigenous culture, and describes how Victoria has grown from a nineteenth century British colony into a modern, multi-cultural state within the Commonwealth of Australia .
