Honours program in Chemistry
The School of Chemistry offers several fourth-year honours programs to eligible students. Honours graduates are eligible for membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and chemical societies from around the world.
The honours program in Chemistry is a one-year course, comprising of coursework and research-based study. The course aims to enable students to define and solve problems relating to their speciality and to conduct research in the field. Honours may be commenced either in first or second semester. The coursework component is conducted in first semester.
Honours graduates possess the skills and qualifications needed to progress to a higher degree (e.g. Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy), or to enter the science and technology industries. In regard to employment, the minimum qualification in many science industries is a BSc (Hons) degree.
The Chemistry honours program is administered by Miss Vicki Burley, on behalf of the Head of School, but much of the specific guidance will be provided by your supervisor. Honours students are affiliated with the research group of their supervisor and afforded most of the privileges of the staff and the postgraduate students of the School. This includes keys for after-hours access, office and laboratory space, and the facilities required for your research. These facilities will be provided through your supervisor's research group.
Types of honours programs
The School of Chemistry offers the following five honours programs:
- Chemistry honours program
- Combined chemistry and biochemistry (chemistry coursework) honours program
- Combined chemistry and biochemistry (biochemistry coursework) honours program
