Postgraduate courses

The School of Chemistry offers three postgraduate courses:

Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the University's major research degree. The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) chiefly administers PhD degrees, which are awarded by the University. Approved candidates undertake a research program under the supervision of at least one member of academic staff.

The first 12 months of a PhD program is known as probationary candidature. Enrolled Master of Science candidates with support from their supervisor(s) may apply to transfer to PhD candidature after a period of twelve months.

Information for PhD applicants, including admission details and course fees can be found on the School of Graduate Studies website, as well as the Postgraduate Handbook, a ready reference to the University's PhD degree procedures.

Master of Science (Research)

The Masters degree by Research aims to provide students with the opportunity to carry out independent and sustained research in a branch of the sciences under appropriate supervision, to develop advanced research skills and techniques, and present their findings in documented scholarly form. The thesis should make an independent contribution to learning, or offer a critical perspective on existing scholarship or methodology.

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) coordinates the Master of Science (by Research). Further information about the entry requirements and how to apply can be found on the SGS website.

Postgraduate Diploma in Science - Chemistry

The School of Chemistry also offers the Postgraduate Diploma in Science.   The course is very similar to the Honours program and is available to students who may not have met the normal Faculty requirements. It is a fourth-year equivalent program, and students who successfully complete this course are eligible to apply for Master of Science candidature.

Admission to a postgraduate diploma normally requires the completion of an undergraduate degree with a major or sequence in the same, or a closely related, discipline. Acceptance into a course requires the approval of the Head of Department.
